Two people snowshoeing through a snowy forest surrounded by snow-covered trees in winter

Snowshoeing on a winter holiday in Styria

A variety of snowshoe walks in the Murau region

Snowshoeing in Styria is an easy way to explore the snow-covered countryside away from the cleared footpaths. Without sinking deep into the snow, you can reach stunning spots that are otherwise almost inaccessible in winter. In the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park, you’ll find a combination of the tranquillity of nature and sporting activities.

Snowshoe area: family run in the Grebenzen ski resort

If you’d like to try walking in deep snow for the first time, this tour is ideal. Along the flatter sections near the family slope, there are marked areas where you can walk safely through the powder snow. The proximity to the ski resort makes it very easy to get started.

  • Length: approx. 2 to 3 km (depending on the loop chosen)
  • Difficulty level: Easy and safe, well suited to beginners.
  • Access: approx. 15 minutes from the hotel.

Grebenzen Circular Tour

  • Difficulty level: Moderate

Snowshoe and pole hire available on site

Snowshoes and the appropriate poles can be easily hired from sports shops in St. Lambrecht or directly from the ski schools in the region. It is advisable to bring sturdy, waterproof footwear, such as hiking boots, as these are strapped directly into the snowshoe bindings.

Guided snowshoe hike with certified guides

If you’d rather leave navigating the terrain to the professionals, you can join a guided snowshoe hike in Styria. Local nature park guides know the safest routes and, with a bit of luck, where you can spot wildlife. Such tours are offered regularly and are a great opportunity to practise the correct walking technique in the countryside.

A varied winter holiday in Austria

Snowshoeing can be easily combined with other activities during a holiday in Styria. Whether you’re on a skiing or cross-country skiing holiday, a snowshoe hike offers a welcome change of pace, allowing you to explore the winter landscape along untouched trails.

Culinary delights and relaxation at Pichlschloss

After returning from a snowshoe hike in the cold powder snow, the warmth of the hotel’s own sauna awaits you at the Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss. A hot cup of tea or a cosy dinner featuring regional produce provides the perfect way to recharge your batteries. The peace and quiet, combined with the view of the snow-covered park, round off the day perfectly.
