Natural swimming pond in Styria

Swimming in harmony with nature in Austria

On hot summer days, there is hardly anything more relaxing than taking a dip in a crystal-clear natural swimming pond. In Styria, particularly in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park, there are swimming spots that do without any chemicals or artificial entertainment. A natural swimming pond means: green sunbathing lawns, unspoilt banks and sweeping views of the countryside. Here, the focus is on experiencing nature. Swimming in these waters not only keeps you fit, but also revitalises the body in a completely natural way thanks to the fresh, soft water. What’s more, these ponds make a valuable contribution to the region’s biodiversity.

The most beautiful swimming spots and lakes in the Murau region

Every lake in the region has its own unique character. Whether it’s a well-known bird sanctuary or a secluded forest lake, Upper Styria offers the perfect spots for swimming and relaxation.

Furtner Pond – a natural swimming pond and a bird sanctuary

Nestled in the gentle mountain landscape at 870 metres above sea level, Furtner Teich is a relic of the Ice Age and arguably the region’s best-known lake.

  • Experience: From the spacious sunbathing lawn, the view stretches far to the peaks of the Niedere Tauern and the Zirbitzkogel.
  • Special feature: As a Natura 2000 conservation area, it is an internationally significant resting place for over 200 species of migratory birds. A circular walking trail provides information about yellow-bellied toads and rare plants, whilst in the north-west a fen serves as a protected refuge for wildlife.

Grasluppteich – walking, swimming and relaxing

There are two natural ponds near Zeutschach: one is perfect for fishing, whilst the other is ideal for swimming, with jetties and a sunbathing area.

  • Tip: A visit here can be perfectly combined with a hike through the Graggerschlucht gorge.
  • Cuisine: Right by the water, the Fischerwirt tempts visitors with fish specialities and ice cream. Combine your day at the beach with a short hike in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park. Just a 20-minute walk away, the Zeutschach spring bubbles up, offering a magnificent view of the Seetal Alps.

Auerlingsee – A source of freshness at the foot of the Grebenzen

Situated right in the woods at the foot of the Grebenzen, Lake Auerling offers a particularly refreshing way to cool off.

  • Character: Thanks to its sheltered location under the trees, the temperatures here are pleasantly cool. A small jetty and wooden benches invite you to take a rest.
  • Accessibility: The lake is an ideal starting point for hikes up the Grebenzen and can be reached from St. Lambrecht in around 80 minutes’ walk through the valley.

Podolerteich – A fairytale-like hidden gem

Tucked away in the heart of the forest and accessible only on foot lies Podolerteich. On particularly hot days, this spot is a real hidden gem in the Styrian Nature Park.

  • Atmosphere: Tall spruce and larch trees are reflected in the still water, lending the pond an almost fairy-tale, romantic atmosphere.
  • Refreshments: It’s not far from here to the Moorstüberl, where organic delicacies from their own farm are served.
