Hiking in Styria

Hiking holidays in the Murau region

Recharge your batteries on a hiking holiday in Styria and experience the liberating effect of walking. Right on the doorstep of the Landsitz Pichlschloss, an extensive network of hiking trails opens up, inviting you to consciously savour the tranquillity of nature. In the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park, you’ll find numerous trails to suit every taste, from gentle paths through fragrant forests to summit hikes offering spectacular views.

Easy and challenging hiking trails

The Murau region has the perfect tour for everyone. The choice ranges from leisurely strolls through the flat valley to challenging alpine hikes. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, take a leisurely stroll through the wide high valley. For those who prefer to tackle some elevation gain, there are challenging uphill hikes towards the Zirbitzkogel or Grebenzen. Upon returning to Pichlschloss, tired feet can look forward to the invigorating Kneipp pool and barefoottrail, the air therapy hall, or the cosy warmth of the sauna.

Fascinating moorlands: Hörfeldmoor & Dürnberger Moor

The region is home to two unique wetland habitats: the Hörfeldmoor is an international Natura 2000 conservation area that provides a habitat for over 500 species of butterfly and rare birds. A wooden walkway leads safely through the mystical moorland vegetation. The Dürnberger Moor, a 9,000-year-old raised bog, is home to botanical rarities such as the carnivorous sundew. In both moorland areas, a viewing tower offers a sweeping view over this sensitive ecosystem.

  • Difficulty: Easy (flat footpaths and boardwalks)
  • Distance: approx. 10–15 mins’ drive from the hotel
  • Duration: Can be tailored to your preferences (approx. 1 to 2 hours per moor)

The Grebenzen – a mountain steeped in legend with breathtaking views

The Grebenzen, a striking limestone massif with three summit peaks, takes its name from the Slavic word for ‘cockscomb’. Here you can discover impressive natural phenomena such as the legendary, deep sinkholes of the ‘Wildes Loch’. Explore the gentle alpine pastures via the Dreiwiesenhütte or enjoy the sweeping views stretching as far as the Lachtal valley and the Karawanken mountains. The mountain captivates with its rich flora and crystal-clear springs such as the “Zeutschacher Ursprung” or “Pöllauer Ursprung”. The scenery is particularly romantic in autumn when the valleys are shrouded in a thick sea of mist, whilst the peaks bask in the sun. You can stop for refreshments at the Dreiwiesenhütte and the Grebenzen refuge.

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance:
    • Approx. 40 mins’ drive to St. Lambrecht
    • On foot via Pöllau: approx. 2 hours
    • On foot via Maria Schönanger: approx. 2 hours
  • Duration: Approx. 2 to 3.5 hours (depending on the route chosen)

The Zirbitzkogel – a popular mountain offering stunning views in the nature park

The 2,396-metre-high Aussichtsberg offers spectacular views stretching across Styria and Carinthia as far as the Karawanken mountains and into Slovenia. Starting from the Tonnerhütte, you’ll hike to the summit, where alpine snowbell, gentian and Speik are in bloom. Once you reach the summit hut, you’ll be rewarded with a hearty snack and can enjoy the view across the entire Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park.

  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
  • Starting point: Approx. 25–30 mins’ drive to the Tonnerhütte from the Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss
  • Duration: Approx. 2 to 2.5 hours’ ascent
