The district capital, Murau

Cultural diversity and history in the town of Murau

Just a 20-minute drive from the Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss, the district capital of Murau offers a wonderful contrast to the tranquillity of the countryside. The town on the River Mur looks back on over 700 years of history, which is still very much alive today in the winding alleys of the old town and its striking buildings. A trip to Murau combines historic architecture with regional craftsmanship and the hospitality of Upper Styria. Guests appreciate the town as a place for a relaxing afternoon, where culture, small shops and museums can be explored within a compact area.

Schwarzenberg Castle

Historical highlights and places of interest

Schwarzenberg Castle, formerly Obermurau Castle, stands majestically above the town, steeped in history. Following the destruction of the original complex, the influential lady Anna Neumann played a particularly significant role in shaping the history of the place. Her legacy enabled the House of Schwarzenberg to build the magnificent Renaissance castle with its characteristic arcaded courtyard in the 17th century. Today, the estate houses private apartments and the forestry administration, and opens its doors in summer as part of guided tours of the castle.

Murau Parish Church

The parish church, founded in 1284 by Otto I of Liechtenstein and consecrated in 1296, is a significant early Gothic pillar basilica built of yellow tuff. The striking crossing tower with six bells is unique in Austria. The three-aisled nave with a groined vault houses valuable 14th-century frescoes as well as Renaissance-era Protestant murals. Chapels with stucco decoration were added in 1640. A spiral staircase dating from 1469 and the historic organ from 1698 complete the building.

Murau Museum of Crafts

In this museum, visitors can gain a tangible understanding of the development of crafts and trade in the region. Particular emphasis is placed on the story of Anna Neumann, whose burial gown serves as the starting point for a fascinating journey through time. Visitors can gain an insight into traditional techniques, with textiles playing a central role. Through talks and workshops, traditional knowledge is preserved, ensuring that the craft traditions of Upper Styria remain vividly documented for guests at Pichlschloss.

Murau Brewery

Murau is inextricably linked to its brewing tradition, which is brought to life in a modern way at the “Brewery of the Senses”. During an interactive tour, guests learn all about the use of pure water and high-quality raw materials. In the old vaulted cellar, the history of beer comes to life, whilst display fountains and aroma stations appeal to the senses. During your trip to Murau, enjoy the famous Murauer beer at a tasting session. As a regional cultural asset, the beer holds a particularly high status.

Kreischberg Gondola Lift

During the summer months, the gondola lift provides a convenient way up to a vast hiking area suitable for the whole family. With little effort, you can reach the tree line, from where easy hikes across flat alpine meadows lead all the way to the summit of the Rosenkranzhöhe. The panorama across the Tauern and Nockberge mountains is impressive and offers sweeping views across the entire region. After some exercise in the fresh air, various mountain huts invite you to stop for a cosy break. A hike on the Kreischberg can easily be combined with a day trip to Murau.
