St. Lambrecht Abbey – Abbey Church & Domenico Abbey Garden

Cultural trip to St. Lambrecht

This historic Benedictine monastery in Styria is a destination that uniquely combines spirituality, architecture and nature. Just a short drive from the Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss, this imposing complex has dominated the high valley for over 950 years and invites visitors to immerse themselves in the deep tranquillity of the monastery walls.

The history and significance of the abbey

Founded in 1076 by Markwart von Eppenstein, Margrave of Carinthia, St Lambrecht Abbey quickly developed into a major centre for art, education and scholarship. It has a particularly close connection to the place of pilgrimage Mariazell, which was founded in the 12th century by monks from St. Lambrecht. Today’s abbey church is a Gothic hall church, whose magnificent Renaissance portal was designed by the master builder Domenico Sciassia. Inside, the high altar and the ornate pulpit bear witness to the Baroque alterations of past centuries.

The Abbey Garden: a place of strength and meditation

A jewel of the complex is the monastery garden, which is open all year round and serves as a place for tranquillity, reflection and experiencing nature. Its design reflects the religious mandate to preserve creation and is divided into four areas dedicated to the elements of earth, air, fire and water. A central feature in the fire section is the labyrinth, modelled on a medieval design, which leads to the inner centre via a 420-metre-long path. The octagonal Baroque pavilion from the 17th century dominates the centre of the garden. From its upper floor, there is a magnificent view over the gardens and the surrounding landscape of the Murau region. A visit can be ideally combined with a detour to the monastery and nature park shop to discover regional specialities and crafts.

Guided tour of the monastery, the bird museum and the Benedictine exhibition

In summer, there is a wide range of daily guided tours on offer, allowing you to discover the architectural treasures and spiritual traditions of the abbey. These tours provide access to the abbey’s magnificent halls and the Benedictine exhibition. A particular highlight is the abbey’s own bird museum, which offers a fascinating insight into the region’s biodiversity. You’ll see at first hand how the abbey has maintained its relevance right up to the present day through ambitious restoration work and the modern ‘School of Being’.
