# Historical heritage in Gurk Cathedral

## A day trip whilst on holiday in Austria

Gurk Cathedral, built between 1140 and 1200, is an architectural gem of international standing. Formerly a bishop’s seat and now a co-cathedral, the building combines High Romanesque stylistic elements with Baroque additions. In the Carinthia region, it is regarded as the centre of veneration for Saint Hemma of Gurk and attracts culture lovers and pilgrims alike. The tranquillity of the sacred spaces and the ornate details make the cathedral an inspiring destination.

### Professional guided tours of Gurk Cathedral

A particular highlight are the daily guided tours, which provide access to the most precious treasures. The basilica, the crypt, the Lenten veil and the colourful Bishop’s Chapel are particularly worth seeing. A historically significant moment was the visit by Pope John Paul II on 25 June 1988, when he prayed at the tomb of Saint Hemma.

### History of Gurk Cathedral

Architecturally, the cathedral is notable for its twin-towered west façade and the crypt, which, with its 100 marble columns, is considered the oldest part of the church. It was here that the tomb of Saint Hemma of Gurk was moved in 1174. The history of the site stretches far back: in 898, Emperor Arnulf granted estates to Zwentibold, an ancestor of Hemma. In 1043, she founded St John’s Church and a monastery. In 1072, the archbishop established the Diocese of Gurk, with Günther von Krappfeld as its first bishop. The site where the cathedral now stands was also once home to a temple dedicated to the Celtic horse goddess Epona; a stone block bearing her name is set into the south-western pillar of the nave.
